IAN AND CARMINHA SPEIRS are working in Brazil with WEC. Being disabled themselves, they have a ministry particularly with handicapped people- those usually marginalised and left to fend for themselves. One of their latest ventures was to organise a church course on the problems of disability in Rolandia. The object being to encourage those attending to start an outreach work in their own churches to meet the needs of the disabled in their locality.
HELCIO AND ANGELA LANGE DA SILVA are independent missionaries working in Mondim de Basto, Portugal.
Angela works in a language school teaching English. They have a small church in the town, which meets on Sundays and through the week. They see God touching and changing lives among those attending to their great encouragement. Church leaders in Vila Grand have left for England and asked Helcia and Angela to carry on the work of the Church there. This is a great challenge which they have accepted, but they will require help to meet it.
PAUL AND ANN PILLAI work for India National Inland Mission based in Northern India. They run an English and Hindu Bible College called Grace Bible College, from which students graduate, evangelising and doing church planting in many parts of the country. There is much persecution from fanatical groups, but their work prospers despite this, and their orphanages have provided many young christians to help the work of the Mission. Paul has just been through a time of failing health, but is now much improved.
JOCHEN AND JOHSHY TEWES have just retired from heading the work of Inter-Mission Development Association, which is based in Chennai, Southern India. Now 65 years old, Jochen, is still involved in the work but only in an advisory capacity.
The association is heavily involved in providing a network of community colleges to help the poor acquire technical trade skills, and their many homes and day care centres give invaluable accommodation and care for needy children.
COLIN AND CHRISTINE MOLYNEUX have worked for many years with the African Inland Mission, particularly in Madagascar, but they are at present doing deputation work in England. Colin has been engaged recently in designing, building, and testing different types of wheel chairs that would be suitable for the rough ground of the African villages. Christine is a present recovering from a heart attach and is now much improved.
SCHOOLS WORKERS IN THE CARLISLE AREA are Michael Fox, working full time and Hannah Scrase-Field part time. In addition to two full time workers, there are many volunteers and a committee who work to promote the Christian message in North Cumbria schools. Assemblies and R.E. lessons are taken, Quest Clubs, Luncheon Clubs, Residentials and other events are all part of a busy programme.
PHILLIP COLLIER has written, published and distributed several booklets in his GROW AND GO series, which help people to grasp the essence of the christian faith and then seek to promote it to others. These have been most useful in Nigeria and much used in many churches there.
LUCY BELTON and CRAIG SWAINSON will all soon be involved in a six month training programme with Youth With a Mission and will be completing their training with evangelistic work overseas.
ESTHER SMITH is undertaking a one year commitment with Operation Mobilisation.
